What should I looking for in subwoofers?

RMS is the only number regarding wattage that matters ("Peak" is a made up number). Brand is important for everything from sound quality to longevity. For $300-$400 for everything I doubt you would be able to get a system that is both loud AND durable. A more realistic cost for quality amp/subs/box/wiring would be around $600-$800.
